Artnet auctions announced the introduction of design auctions to be held alongside the existing auctions of paintings, sculpture, prints and photographs. The inaugural sale featured a collectible 20th century decorative arts and design, as well as contemporary design from an international roster of artists and designers. Included were historical highlights by Marcel Breuer, Greta Grossman, Pierre Jeanneret, Pierre Paulin, Hans Wegner, Gio Ponti and Ettore Sottsass and contemporary works by Ron Arad, Gaetano Pesce, Maria Pergay, Marc Newson and Tokujin Yoshioka.
New auction lots of design will go live each week, providing a consistent and curated online auction marketplace. The department will focus on all periods of 20th and 21st century design, including Secessionist, Art Deco, French modernism, American mid-century, Scandinavian and Italian modernism, Post-modern and 1980s design,American Studio furniture and Contemporary, as well as glass and ceramics from all periods; the department will also promote specific themes and categories where greater market attention is needed.
According to new department head, Brent Lewis, former Christie's auctioneer and Gallery Director at Moss, "The opportunities presented to buy and sell a curated selection of design via auction with the ease of artnet auction's online platform are very exciting. The flexibility and efficiency this model provides will open up design to a new audience, as well as providing established collectors and dealers a viable source and outlet; all under the banner of artnet, one of the world's largest art and design communities and the major resource for art and design, information, news; and now, access to both primary and secondary markets."
